Bio

Bryce Moore tried to write his first book in third grade, and his since produced seven finished novels. His debut novel for young adults, Vodník, was released in March 2012 from Tu Books, an imprint of LEE & LOW BOOKS.

Vodník takes readers to TrenĨín, Slovakia where Roma teen Tomas has returned with his family after living in the United Sates for ten years. Upon his return, Tomas discovers that his roots extend deeper into the country of his birth than he ever imagined. Able to see characters from Slovak folklore that others think imaginary, Tomas becomes a pawn in an age-old struggle that transcends mythology and must make a deal with Death to save his cousin’s life.

Kirkus Reviews has called Vodník “a compelling fantasy adventure,” and New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson says, “Vodnik is compelling, interesting and darkly humorous. I think you’ll love it.”

Vodník draws upon Moore’s own experience living in and exploring Slovakia, where his wife is from. He first got the idea for Vodník in Slovakia when he saw a fountain in the shape of a vodník. “So many aspects of the creature seemed strange: teacups, dripping water, green hair?” Moore says. “The creature’s mythology crept into my head then and made itself comfortable. I couldn’t forget it.”

Moore hopes that readers will take away from Vodník the idea that “external appearances aren’t nearly as important as internal character. ‘Good’ and ‘evil’ aren’t always readily apparent.”

Bryce Moore earned his Bachelors degree in English and Linguistics from Brigham Young University. He went on to graduate school and holds a Masters in Creative Writing and Library Science. He now works full-time as a librarian and lives in Western Maine with his wife and their two children, both of whom are being raised bilingual in English and Slovak.
